How Hearing Aids Work
At a basic level, hearing aids fill the gap created by a hearing loss by receiving and amplifying sound. While there are many types of hearing aid technology, the four basic components are:
Hearing aids are comprised of tiny electrical components that may experience wear and tear over time. If this is the case, you’ll likely need to visit your Better Hearing Inc to have the problem assessed. Whether it’s simply due to aging or the units have been exposed to moisture, excessive wax, debris or physical damage, you’ll want your hearing specialist to evaluate the extent of the repairs needed.
Common Hearing Aid Issues
You may try to turn the hearing aid on in the morning and find that there is no sound or you may find that the battery door has come unhinged. These things do happen, even when the hearing aids are properly cared for. If you should experience an issue that requires a repair, take the hearing aids to our office to see Mona, our audiologist. We are equipped and trained to evaluate and diagnose broken hearing aids. Some minor hearing aid repairs can be completed in the office in a short period of time; others may need to be sent to the manufacturer for repair.
Our staff can help determine what kind of repair is necessary if you feel your hearing aid is not working properly. Your hearing specialist will work as a liaison between you and the manufacturer, should the hearing aid require being sent away, to ensure you are up-to-date and know when you’ll be getting your devices back.
Hearing Aid Repairs
If you're a current patient and own hearing aids that weren't fitted in our office, we're happy to try to repair your hearing aids. We're able to service most major manufacturers of hearing aids and can advise you as to whether yours is a brand that we service.
Hearing aids come with a warranty when purchased new. If your warranty has expired, it's possible to repair most hearing aids for a small fee depending on the extent of the repair and the age of the hearing aid.
Depending on the hearing-aid manufacturer, this repair may come with a new year-long warranty. In the event your hearing aid is severely damaged and unable to be repaired, Mona will work with you to determine what devices would be best for you. She'll provide you with details when you bring your hearing aid into the office.
Approximately one in three Americans age 65 and over live with hearing loss. But hearing loss doesn’t just affect seniors. In school-aged children, 30 out of every 1,000 are hearing impaired. In adults, hearing loss can contribute to cognitive decline, isolation, and depression. For children, hearing loss makes language, speech and educational development a challenge.
Unfortunately, most adults live with hearing loss for an average of seven years before seeking help. If you think you or a family member has hearing loss, don’t put off diagnostic testing. Call us at (609) 645-3055 to schedule an appointment.
Emotional Health and Hearing Loss
Your ability to hear and your emotional health are related. If you live with untreated hearing loss, you're at an increased risk for depression. You'll also live with higher levels of stress and anxiety. When hearing and understanding speech is difficult, you may withdraw and become isolated because it’s easier to disconnect than struggle to hear.
When it’s hard to hear in a group setting, you don’t attend and participate in group gatherings. The prospect of giving a presentation at work or attending a large meeting may make you anxious. In addition, studies show that untreated hearing loss can lead to:
Studies by John Hopkins and the National Institute of Aging found if you are a senior with untreated hearing loss you have at a greater risk for dementia. While the link for the two conditions has not been established, there are several theories.
First, untreated hearing loss can lead to social isolation. Social isolation has been proven to increase the risk for dementia and cognitive decline. Secondly, when the brain struggles to process decreased auditory input a cognitive overload may occur. When all cognitive effort is focused on hearing, other areas suffer.
Wearing hearing aids increases auditory input, reduces social isolation, and can help stave off dementia.
Bodily Harm
Untreated hearing loss increases the risk for bodily injury and hospitalization. Simply walking down the street is more dangerous if you cannot hear and locate the source of sounds around you. Driving is more dangerous when you can’t hear traffic.
At Better Hearing, Inc we understand the impact untreated hearing loss can have on your quality of life, as well as your physical and emotional well-being. Talk to our audiologist to determine if you could benefit from hearing-loss treatment.
